focusing on contemporary art coming out of Montreal.

The contemporary art event (in)Vision is an invasion of Canadian art on foreign soil.(in)Vision is about addressing cultural perspectives and provoking dialogue. Its aim is to ensure that the rich diversity and strength of Canada’s voice is heard in today’s global village.

It is art that addresses the human condition, through lenses that are at once intimate, relational and socio-political, and in which memory acts as the weaving fibre that runs through all the artworks selected for the exhibition.

Four complementary sections are featured:

  • Visual Art (painting, drawing, prints, photography, collage)

  • Video Art

  • Performance Art

  • Film

Under the curatorship and artistic direction of Alessandro Mangiarotti with Joyce Yahouda as guest curator, and Emmet Walsh as guest curator for the film section, this inaugural edition of Canadian (in)Vision will give  some thirty  Montreal artists the opportunity to “invade” a seaside town on the renowned Island of Ischia, in Italy. Within the confines of this tourist destination, both the local inhabitants and its many international visitors will be exposed to Montreal's rich and thought-provoking current day art scene.

Oneirically. The creative dream of a hidden reality

Contemporary Art Exhibition

Ischia Island  | Villa Ravino | 26th May – 3rd June 2018

“A dream is like a second skin, or better, is even deeper. It is unique. A dream is the project of a hidden desire. A dreamer does rarely reveal his dream, just like a player diverts his rival or a simple nosy person. Probably, he is afraid that his dream could disappear forever. Because his real duty is to preserve his dream (Amedeo Modigliani)”.

What is a dream? When the night turns off rational consciousness, our mind is free to lead us where our nature, our most authentic self, wants to go to regenerate: The unconscious. A dream is the psychic result which expresses itself through images and originates from an unconscious desire; it represents a repressed content, and consequently bears a message which can be deciphered through its interpretation. It is a message of the unconscious, namely of the part of the psyche which our ego originates from and through a dream, its images and dreamlike symbols “speaks” to us. Sometimes, it consists of emotions or attitudes refused by our ego, conflicts and traumas which should be revised and integrated, fears to be faced. Participating artists are requested to research this unconscious, hidden desire, to bring it back to reality, to perceive emotions and express it in their work of art.

OCTOBER

8th – 13th October: “Corsi Musicali” (“Music Courses”) by the Cultural Association ISCHIAMUSICA, Prof. Corrado Pasquotti, composer and lecturer of the Conservatorio di Venezia (Conservatory of Venice)

12th – 13th October: “In the Realm of the Senses”, the 11th MERISTEMA, a convention by several high-level researchers (biologists, musicians, philosophers and men of letters) who will debate about senses and perception.

13th October: Concert and inauguration of our Sensory Garden, where visitors with reduced mobility can enjoy full accessibility and those with low vision a really comprehensive experience. Not only, as the garden concept also includes a spatial non limitation. The patriarchs of the Bible represent the beginning of human history: they had been created in the image and likeness of God, but differ from Him in one aspect: their limit. Abraham is insane, Isaac is blind, Jacob is lame, Moses is stammering. Therefore, handicap is a clear metaphor of the human condition as we are all somehow disabled persons.

For instance, sometimes sight is not enough for a sighted person. It is not the appearance of Christ that makes the disciple Thomas believe in His Resurrection but putting his fingers into Jesus’ chest sore and proclaiming: «My Lord and my God!».

So, in the new Ravino Gardens Path, along with the sector dedicated to sight, we suggest those dedicated to the sense of taste, touch, smell, hearing. The sense of touch, as the first one to develop in a mother’s womb and the only one covering the whole human body, is experienced in proximity and confirms the achievement. The sense of smell traces back to animal nature, works in the distance, determines repulsion or attraction and is able to appreciate each taste in all its quality nuances; taste classifies just 5 great categories on which it expresses only a quantitative evaluation: bitter, sweet, sour, savoury, spicy. But taste has its own characteristic: to perceive it one has to swallow something. All religions have inside their belief the sacrifice of food, offered by man to God or vice versa: that nature is the body of God is also a prevalent metaphor. And this body also has His voice, which can be heard in the water gushing, the rustle of the wind and the leaves, the singing of birds, the humming of insects.

By listening, looking, touching, smelling and eating this Body of “Deus sive natura” (“God or Nature”), according to Spinoza’s definition, we can discover ourselves in the presence of Divine in our humanity.

Even more in parks and gardens which are just temples of nature.
